Everett Levan
June 28, 1928 - April 25, 2013Storm Lake, Iowa
Everett H. Levan, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on April 25, 2013, at his home in Storm Lake.
Everett was born on June 28, 1928, on a family farm near Vigil, South Dakota. At the age of seven, he moved with his family to Storm Lake where he attended school, graduating in May, 1946.
After becoming interested in flying during his high school years, Everett began working at the Storm Lake Airport cleaning planes in exchange for lessons. In 1950, he earned his pilot’s license. He continued to log many hours and renewed his license for many years to come.
On September 5, 1948, Everett married his high school sweetheart, Doris Jean “Susie” Breecher, at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake. They would have celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary in September this year. To this union, two children were born, Michael Dean and Sharon Kay.
By this time, Everett was working with his father, Otto, and brother, Paul, in the construction business, building many houses (including one for his family on Lochedem Drive) and farm buildings.
In 1952, Everett attended the Iowa Highway Patrol School at Camp Dodge in Johnston. While he was employed with the Patrol, he lived with his family in Hampton, Iowa. Having a passion for the construction business, however, he became a very dedicated carpenter with his own business, E.H. Levan Construction, for the rest of his working years before retiring in 1993.
An active member at the First Baptist Church until his health failed, Everett taught Sunday School for a number of years and served as a deacon as well as a member of the Board of Trustees. He also helped where needed with repairs at the church.
A quiet, humble man committed to his family, Everett loved his home, garden, and fish pond. Always in the backyard, he was forever planting something new.
For many years, Everett really enjoyed watching his grandson, Jason, race his stock car, and he loved watching his granddaughter, Michelle, play sports. He also enjoyed making toy boxes for his three great-grandsons and wood projects for the family.
Preceding Everett in death were his parents, Otto and Pearl Levan; his son, Michael Dean; his brother, Paul; his sister, Ruby Tyson, and her husband, Charles; and his brother-in-law, Milton Phillips.
Everett is survived by his wife, Doris “Susie” Levan, of Storm Lake; his daughter, Sharon Mickelson, and her husband, Stephan, of Storm Lake; his grandson, Jason Mickelson, of Storm Lake; his granddaughter, Michelle Marshall, and her husband, Karl, of Overland Park, Kansas; his great grandsons, Jalen, Dillon, and Baron Marshall, of Overland Park, Kansas; and his sisters-in-law, Shirley Young, and her husband, William “Bill,” and Marge Phillips, all of Gladbrook, Iowa, and Loraine Levan, of Sandy, Oregon; as well as several nieces; nephews; and numerous friends.
