Stanley Lee Hartwell, age 56, of Peterson, Iowa, passed away on April 16, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Stan was born on July 15, 1956, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Ernest and Verjean (Bauer) Hartwell. He grew up in Storm Lake, attending Storm Lake schools and graduating with the class of 1975. In 1976, he married Jane Gibbons from Newell, Iowa. They were subsequently blessed with two children, Jamay and Chet.

Stan worked for Ernie’s Feed and Field Service, a former business of his father’s. In 1978, he opened a gun business in Storm Lake called “You Shoot ‘Em, I’ll Clean ‘Em”, where he shared his love of fishing, hunting, and trapping with others. Stan was a skilled gunman. He worked as a jailor for the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and served as a paramedic for the Buena Vista County Hospital and as a fireman for the City of Storm Lake for years. In most recent years, he enjoyed helping area farmers and tending to his unique hobby farm.

Stan was a true friend who stuck by his friends through many hardships and triumphs in their lives. He was dearly loved by family and friends.

Stan loved his family and is survived by his wife, Jane (Gibbons) Hartwell, of Peterson, Iowa; his daughter, Jamay Patten, and her husband, Kyle, of Des Moines, Iowa; his son, Chet Hartwell, and his friend, Cassie Moritz, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his granddaughter, Lauren Jane Patten; his father-in-law, Rolan “Gib” Gibbons, of Sac City, Iowa; his brothers-in-law, Doug Gibbons, and his wife, Evy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Steve Gibbons, and his wife, Marian, of Ankeny, Iowa; his nephews, Travis Gibbons, of Charleston, South Carolina, and Tyler Gibbons, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and his nieces, Jennifer Gibbons, and her friend, Nick Novak, of Dunkerton, Iowa, and Stephanie Gibbons, and her friend, Nick Schnicker, of Iowa City, Iowa; as well as extended family members and many friends.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Verjean Hartwell; his step-father, Claude Thompson; his mother-in-law, Betty Gibbons; his step-mother-in-law, Gwen Gibbons; and an infant brother.

Visitation: 2:00-8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00-8:00 p.m., April 19, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., April 20, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rembrandt, Iowa.
Interment: April 20, 2013, at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
