Duane Herman Fonley
January 7, 1931 - April 2, 2013

Duane Herman Fonley, son of Herman and Marie (Grapenthin) Fonley, was born on January 7, 1931, in Linn Grove, Iowa. Growing up in Linn Grove, he received his early education at Highview Consolidated School, graduating in 1948. He continued his education at Buena Vista College, earning a teaching degree in 1952. He, then, served in the National Guard for eight years.

Duane married Miriam Schroeder on May 23, 1954, at Zion United Methodist Church in rural Spencer. Following their marriage, he taught school in Cornell, Spencer, Lake Center, Milford, and South Clay for a total of eleven years. In January of 1957, he and Miriam moved to Spencer while he continued teaching. In 1964, they established Flowers by Fonley which they operated for forty years before retiring in 2004. A member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Duane also served at one time as president of the HyNoon Kiwanis in Spencer. He was especially proud of his family's Watershed Protection Plan that they implemented on their farm.

Duane passed away at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and their husbands: Darlene and Ed Ponsor and Norma and Dale Schimmer; and a son-in-law, Jeff Franker.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Miriam, of Spencer; three daughters: Myrna (Dave) Edmonds, Lonelle Franker, and Cleone (Glenn) Rouse, all of Spencer; nine grandchildren: Joshua (Tiffani) Edmonds, Brandon (Laura) Edmonds, Gabriel Franker and Julie Anderson, Eli (Sara) Franker, Jacob Franker and Ashley Kabrick, Caitlynn Rouse, Emily Rouse, Taylor Rouse, and Doug Albert and Jaden Rouse; six great grandchildren: Katie, David, Jeffrey, Rex, Barrett, and Maja and one future great grandson who is expected very soon, Kinnick Duane; one sister, Frances Hill, of Cottonwood, Minnesota; and three brothers: Doyle (Marilyn) Fonley, of Gulf Shores, Alabama, Dayle (Genny) Fonley, of Nashua, Iowa, and Donnie (Dee) Fonley, of Ocala, Florida; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, April 5, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
