Shirley J. Baier, age 78, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on March, 27, 2013, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Shirley Janice Negus, the daughter of Orson and Elsie (Heinze) Negus, was born in Sutherland, Iowa, on September 5, 1934. She lived her youth and received her education in Sutherland, graduating from Sutherland High School. Following graduation, she served as the secretary to the school superintendent and the school board.

On March 24, 1954, Shirley married Jerald L. Baier at the Sutherland United Methodist Church. They were subsequently blessed with five children: Bruce, Pamela, Patricia, Melissa, and Brian. Shortly after their marriage, Shirley joined her husband in France where he was in the service. Following Jerry’s honorable discharge, they resided in Peterson, Iowa, before moving to Sioux Rapids in 1969. While living in Sioux Rapids and raising their five children, Shirley was employed at Moe’s Clothing Store, Ray’s Foodland, and Don’s Market. She also worked as an Avon representative for many years.

A member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids, Shirley also belonged to the Women’s Fellowship and the Circle. Very much a part of her children’s lives, she served as a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a Girl Scout Troop leader. She also took an active role in the community by participating in the BPW and the Study Club and supporting her children's many athletic activities. Her many special interests included gardening, flower arranging, bird watching, reading, sewing, drawing, and following the activities of her children and grandchildren. Shirley was also an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Among her greatest loves in life, she enjoyed spending time at their cottage at Spirit Lake.

Shirley’s life will always be honored and cherished by her family which includes her husband of fifty-nine years, Jerald (Jerry), of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her children: Bruce (Linda) Baier, of Alta, Iowa, Pam (Charlie) Ahlrichs, of Pocahontas, Iowa, Patti (Gary) Juhl, of La Porte City, Iowa, Missy (Kyle) Gingrich, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Brian (Amy) Baier, of Brandon, South Dakota; her grandchildren: Ben Baier, Jessie (Kyle) Hansen, Jamie Baier, Rob (Katy) Ahlrichs, Libby Ahlrichs (Curt Roberts), Amanda (Darren) Mar, Kaitlin Juhl, Ryan Gingrich, Jason Gingrich, Samuel Gingrich, Emma Baier, and Brandon Baier; three great grandchildren: Connor Hansen and Blake and Caleb Roberts; her brothers: Roger (Carole), Robert (Nina), Merle (Diane), and David (Cathy) Negus; and her sisters: Janet Negus and Donna (Kevin) Dighton; as well as nieces; nephews; other extended family members; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a great grandson, Owen Roberts; a brother, James Negus; and two sisters, Marjorie Negus and Helen Selk.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Peterson, Iowa. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 29, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
