Robert W. Struve
December 17, 1920 - February 24, 2013

Robert W. Struve, age 92, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on February 24, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Robert W. Struve, the son of Hans and Emily (Hughes) Struve, was born on a farm near Linn Grove, Iowa, on December 17, 1920. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to a family farm north of Sioux Rapids where he lived his youth and received his education. He was a 1938 graduate of the Cornell High School.

Bob faithfully served his country in the United States Army during World War II from October of 1942 to January of 1945. He, then, served as a 1st lieutenant in the Army Air Force from February 1, 1945, to October 12, 1945. A pilot, he flew B17 and B24 aircrafts.

Bob married Leona Shull on August 29, 1942, in Pender, Nebraska. They were blessed with five children: Jullee, Linda, Sue, Nancy, and Thomas. Following Bob’s honorable discharge, they farmed north of Sioux Rapids until 1959 at which time they moved to their farm south of Rembrandt. Bob had a lifelong devotion to his farming vocation and retired from farming in 1986.

Leona died in 1978. On December 17, 1981, Bob married Marjaleen Mansfield in Sioux Rapids. In 1984, they moved into Sioux Rapids. Marjaleen preceded Bob in death in January of 1995.

Bob was a longtime member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids, the Masonic Lodge, and the Eastern Star. He will be remembered as a former school board member. Bob enjoyed fishing, boating, and traveling, which included spending several winters at Mission, Texas.

His life will always be honored and cherished by his family which includes his children: Jullee (Gerald) Adams, of Odessa, Missouri, Linda (Rodney) Hatlen, of Rembrandt, Iowa, Sue (Tom) Cavanaugh, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Nancy (Mark) Pitts, of Hamburg, Iowa, and Tom(Glenda) Struve, of Rembrandt, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; his sister, Lela Anderson, of Linn Grove, Iowa; and a special step son, Monte (Cheryl) Mansfield and family of Austin, Texas; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; two granddaughters, Kris (Adams) Moore and Erica Hatlen; one brother, Richard Struve; and one sister, Vivian Bainbridge.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
