Ethel J. Crowley, age 83, of Newell, Iowa, died March 5, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Ethel J. Kohnke was born on October 23, 1929, in Manson, Iowa, the daughter of John and Marie (Welter) Kohnke. As a child, she was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church.

Growing up, she attended first country school in rural Manson and then Manson Community School.

Ethel married Bud Vanderhoff. They were blessed with six children: John, Jackie, James, Jan, Joyce, and Jack. As a family, they made their home in Newell where Bud and Ethel purchased the John Deere Implement Dealership in 1961. They later named it Vanderhoff Implement. Bud passed away in 1972, and Ethel later married Don Crowley.

A board member of the Newell Good Samaritan Center and the Newell Library, Ethel also served as a Newell City Council member. In her spare time, she enjoyed dancing, doing puzzles, and playing cards, especially Skip-Bo with her grandchildren. She took pride in her flower beds which blossomed beautifully every summer. A loving mother, grandmother, and friend, she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: James “Jim” Vanderhoff, of Linn Grove, Iowa, Jan (Mike) Dick, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Joyce (Dana) Haahr and Jack (Karla) Vanderhoff, all of Newell, Iowa; her grandchildren: Jason (Michele) Vanderhoff, of Newell, Iowa, Jennifer Kruse and Jodi (Alex) Rojas, all of Fonda, Iowa; Brenda (Kevin) Lullmann, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Brad (Jaimee) Dick, of Virginia, Austin (Andrea) Vanderhoff, of Sac City, Iowa, Alex Vanderhoff, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Paige Vanderhoff, of Ankeny, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Jaron, Jaicee, Chelsee, Reed, Magdalena, R.J., A.J., Taylor, Ashley, Skyler, Isabella, Samantha, Madelyn, and Macy; her brother, Herman (Jan) Kohnke, of Clare, Iowa; and her sister, Betty Lyon, of Pocahontas, Iowa; as well as nieces; nephews; her beloved Shih tzu puppy, Snoopy; extended family members; and friends.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Kohnke; her husband, Bud Vanderhoff; two infant sons, John and Jackie; her mother- and father-in-law, Clem and Aurilla Vanderhoff; her daughter-in-law, Kate Vanderhoff; and a special friend, Orval Hamann.

Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., March 09, 2013, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa.
Visitation: 9:00-10:30 a.m., March 09, 2013, at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa.
Interment: March 09, 2013, at St. Patrick's Cemetery in rural Clare, Iowa.
