Denise Zipf Collins
December 5, 1957 - January 16, 2013Denise Collins, 55, passed away on January 16, 2013, in Duluth, Georgia, with her husband, Mike, and son, Nick, at her side after visits from her mother, her father, and all her sisters and brothers.
Denise Caroline Zipf was born on December 5, 1957, in Omaha, Nebraska, the second daughter of Bonnie (Cleveland) and Maynard Zipf, Sr. After graduating from Albert City High School in 1976, she attended business school and worked in an attorney's office for several years.
On June 1, 1985, Denise married Michael Collins in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They resided in Chicago for some time and later moved to the Atlanta area. In Atlanta, Denise worked for Columbia Pictures.
On July 16, 1989, their son Nicholas was born, the light of their lives. They enjoyed taking trips together, walking the dogs in the park, and biking in earlier years.
A consummate shopper, Denise loved going to the beach, enjoyed photography, and became very skilled at computers. She took great joy in coming from a big family, with whom she spent many happy times all throughout her life. She courageously battled cancer more than once and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Denise was preceded in death by her grandparents in Iowa and Nebraska.
She is survived by her husband, Mike Collins; her son, Nick Collins; her mother, Bonnie Zipf; her father, Maynard Zipf, Sr.; her four sisters: Diana (Randy) Foster, Julie (Mike) Mailliard, Leah (Matt) Jimenez, and Elizabeth (John) Leiknes; her two brothers, Maynard (Sheila) Zipf, Jr., and David (Sherry) Zipf; her two sisters-in-law, Cindy (Dennis) George and Pat (John) Vanhandel; her aunt, Lila Murray, of Storm Lake; and her uncle, Marvin Cleveland, of Kansas City; as well as her many nieces, nephews, and several cousins.
Memorial services were held at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 19, 2013.
