Gary Edward Widman, age 56, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on January 4, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake after a courageous twelve year battle with cancer. During eleven of those twelve years, he proudly walked in the Relay for Life.
Gary was born on December 20, 1956, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Gerald Lee and Mary Berenice (Hendershott) Widman. He was baptized, received his first communion, and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake where he was currently a member.
Growing up, Gary attended Hayes school in Storm Lake before graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1975. On March 15, 1986, Gary married Karen Ann Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with two sons, Bryce and Blake.
A self-employed farmer, Gary enjoyed taking care of the land. He loved fishing, hunting, and playing cribbage. Considered the “green grocer,” he grew many vegetables, which he gave to friends and family. He also loved doing macramé. Gary highly cherished his family, always placing them first. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Karen Widman, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sons, Bryce and Blake Widman, both also of Storm Lake, Iowa; his father, Gerald (stepmother, Chris) Widman, of Storm Lake; his brothers, Michael Widman, of Eugene, Oregon, and Richard Widman, of Altoona, Iowa; and his sisters, Maryann (Randy) Johnson, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jean (Scott) Miksch, of Eugene, Oregon; as well as nieces; nephews; extended family; and many friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Berenice Widman; and his parents-in-law, Lloyd and Florence Martin.
Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., January 07, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., January 08, 2013, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
