Viola McCullough, age 93, of Sioux City, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on December 7, 2012, at the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Vi was born on September 15, 1919, in Massena, Iowa, down by Atlantic, Iowa. The oldest of seven children, she grew up mostly on farms. She started out living on a farm around the Walnut, Iowa, area until she was about ten years old. She and her parents, Dan and Sarah (Smith) Mertz, then, moved to Fonda, Iowa, where they lived on numerous farms in that area.
After graduating in 1937 from the Fonda High School, Vi, then, worked as a cook for about one and a half years.
On September 15, 1938, she married James E. McCullough. In 1941, they were blessed with their daughter, Joyce McCullough Nielsen. They lived around Fonda for the first few years. Then, they migrated to Seattle, Washington, in 1945. In 1949, they moved back from Seattle and lived in the Fonda area once again, where Vi clerked in a grocery store and worked as a waitress in one of the cafes on Main Street in Fonda. After leaving Fonda, they moved first to Mallard, Iowa, and then to the Humboldt, Iowa, area. After making their home there for many years, they moved to Storm Lake in 1978.
Those left to cherish Vi's memory include her grandchildren: Lori and Randy Hunt, Kevin and Kris Nielsen, and Kelly and Robert Scott; her great grandchildren: Doug Hunt (Amy Quick), Amanda (Mike) Hunt, Nick Kirschbaum (Mary Mills), Nathan Kirschbaum, Kent (Allison) Nielsen, Camille (Mike) Mueller, Alyssa (Dave) Flanagan, and Bradlee and Dustin Scott; her great, great grandchildren: Connor, Sophie, Ave, Payton, Caden, and Kyler; her sisters: Fern Marron, Vivian “Buddy” (Gene) Bunnelle, Loretta “Red” Boettcher, and Shirley (Mack) McClurg. Having created a new family, she also became “Grandma Vi” to: Kermit and Shirley Hendricks, Jerry and Gariann Pyle, and Chris and Jan Pyle and their children, Austin and Alexis.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Sarah Mertz; her husband, James McCullough, in 1982; her daughter, Joyce, and son-in-law, Ken Nielsen; one sister, Elane Miller; and one brother, David Mertz.
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m., December 14, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., December 15, 2012, at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa.
