Shirley Josephine Hedstrom
January 15, 1928 - December 16, 2012

Storm Lake, Iowa

Shirley Hedstrom, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly of Ida Grove, Iowa, died on Sunday, December 16, 2012, at her home in Storm Lake.

Shirley Josephine Daley was born January 15, 1928, in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Hulda (Nelson) Daley. The middle child of five, she had two older brothers and two younger sisters. Having accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age, she treasured her faith throughout her life.

Growing up, Shirley attended school in Sioux City, Iowa, graduating from Central High School in 1945. Through one of her church camp friends who lived in Kiron, she met a handsome young man named Gerald, whom she dated a few times during high school. Following high school graduation, she attended Bethel College, becoming friends with Maydelle Hedstrom, while Gerald went into the service.

Shirley held various jobs around Sioux City, including at the air base and the telegraph office. Then, she moved out to Denver, Colorado, with some friends, including one of Gerald’s from Kiron. There, she began a career as a court reporter with the Social Security office. God, however, always had His hand on their lives. Shirley and Gerald always knew what the other one was doing because of their many mutual friends. Years later, Gerald, having been recently widowed, contacted her. They rekindled their relationship and changed their life plans as a result.

On January 14, 1967, Shirley married Gerald Hedstrom in Omaha, Nebraska. She didn’t just say “I do” to Gerald because he came with three young daughters: Glenda, Gail, and Glee. Together, they lovingly raised their three daughters on their farm near Ida Grove. Shirley worked as a secretary at Farmland Foods and later became a real estate agent, but she most enjoyed her roles as a homemaker, wife, and mother. After retiring, they moved to Storm Lake.

A member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa, Shirley regularly attended women’s Bible study. They were also long time members of the Kiron Baptist Church until they moved to Storm Lake. Shirley also belonged to the Women’s Missionary Fellowship and the Birthday Club.

Above all, Shirley valued family gatherings. She and Gerald enjoyed visiting grandchildren and great grandchildren around the country. They also enjoyed traveling to Alaska, Europe, including Sweden, and Brazil and to Arizona for several months in the winter. Shirley definitely had spiritual gifts of hospitality, praying for and encouraging others. She was always sending a card, giving a call, visiting, bringing a gift of food, and offering hospitality to many. Those on the receiving end of her cooking and hospitality were very fortunate, indeed! As a friend described her, “Shirley was a woman of grace, of charm, and of class who always made everyone she met feel important.”

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Gerald Hedstrom, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Glenda (Irv) Larsen, of Urbandale, Iowa, Gail (Doug) Lacey, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Glee (Dave) Crippin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Ann (David) Davis, of Olathe, Kansas, Eric (Melanie) Larsen, of Des Moines, Iowa, Amy (Michael) Schrodt, of Waukee, Iowa, Ben (Katie) Lacey, of Seattle, Washington, Jennifer (Nathaniel) Feddes, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jill Lacey, and her fiancé, Shane Furgason, of Iowa City, Iowa, Alex (Laura) Crippin, of Northwood, Iowa, and Nick Crippin, of Des Moines, Iowa; her great grandchildren: David, Abby, and Claire Davis; Isaiah, Elliott, and Judah Larsen; Eva, Vivian, and Daphne Lacey; and Jonathan Feddes; her brother, Bob (Helen) Daley, of Palatine, Illinois; her sisters: Mary Jane Thompson, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Geraldine DeVries, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Dorothy Daley, Bueal Hedstrom, Evangeline and Bill Webster, Maydelle Oslund, Evelyn and Jim Moller; as well as extended family and friends.
