Karole Graen, age 75, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died October 2, 2012, at her home.
Karole Joanne Hansen was born January 20, 1937, on a farm south of Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Rexford L. and Erma C. Hansen. She was confirmed in the Methodist Church in Ruthven where she sang in the church choir.
Karole attended Webb and Ruthven Schools, graduating in 1954 from Ruthven High School. In 1957, she graduated from the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota. She, then, spent some time working in Chicago at the University of Chicago and the Cook County Hospital.
On October 27, 1957, Karole married Jack L. Graen at the Methodist Church in Ruthven. They were blessed with two children, Jeff and Amy.
Karole worked as a registered nurse at a school in Adel, Iowa, part-time at Bil-Mar Foods in Storm Lake, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, and for twenty-one years as the Buena Vista County Public Health Nurse Administrator before retiring. She had a compassion for teaching health promotion to the under-privileged.
In her spare time, Karole loved reading and cooking. She enjoyed going to her children’s and grandchildren’s many basketball, football and baseball games as well as their other school activities. An avid Hawkeye fan, she also liked playing the penny machines at the casino. Most of all, however, she treasured traveling with her husband, especially wintering in Arizona.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of fifty-four years, Jack Graen, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Jeff (Janet) Graen, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Amy (Joe) Baratta, of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchildren: Josh, Michael, Christopher, and Nicole Graen and Jonathan and Matthew Dunn; and her brothers-in-law, Dick Pierson, of Spencer, Iowa, Noel (Joan) Graen, of Finksburg, Maryland, and Marion Jaycox, of Sanborn, Iowa, as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Karole was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Donna Pierson.
Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m., October 06, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m., October 05, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
