Robert Elwood Fortin
October 13, 1938 - September 09, 2012

Storm Lake, Iowa

Robert Fortin, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, September 9, 2012, at his residence.

Robert Elwood Fortin was born on October 13, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Polydore Joseph and Linnea I. Paulson Fortin. Growing up, he attended Manuel High School and was a member of Highlander Boys.

While attending high school, Robert was appointed a Cadet First Lieutenant in the Fifth Unit of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. On November 14, 1956, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. A radio specialist, he served his country until he was honorably discharged on November 10, 1960.

In April 1968, Robert married Tamra Sheets in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. To this union four children were born, Julie, Lindy, Charles, and Jessica. Together with his family, he moved to Storm Lake where he worked for Wisconsin Lumber Company and later had his own roofing and repair company. In 1987, he began driving for Furst McNess in Storm Lake, a position he held until his retirement in October 2011.

Baptized in November of 1976 at the First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, he remained a member of that congregation, severing on various boards and committees.

While on the road truck driving, Robert had little time for hobbies, but he did enjoy helping the children “fix up” their houses when he could. Driving, however, was really his “hobby.” He loved his family and treasured the time he was able to spend with them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Tamra Fortin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Julie (Rich) Klahn, of Urbandale, Iowa, Lindy Fortin, of Eagan, Minnesota, Charles (Kim) Fortin, of Savage, Minnesota, and Jessica Fortin, of Robbinsdale, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Allison and Jared Klahn, Mikayla Hernandez, and Maraike and Dominik Fortin; a brother, Ken (Carol) Fortin, of Loveland, Colorado; a sister, Joan Oswalt, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Koy (Bob) Wolverton, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Art (Themla) Sheets, of Longmont, Colorado; as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and many friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; his brother-in-law, Bob Oswalt; and a nephew.
