Terry McGowan
July 13, 1950 - August 29, 2012Terry L. McGowan, 62, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston after a courageous battle with cancer.
Terry was born on July 13, 1950, in Alta, the son of Delmar & Betty Steward McGowan. He graduated from Storm Lake High School with the Class of 1968, and then pursued a college education at Morningside College in Sioux City. After graduating from college, he served his country in the Army National Guard.
Having began his teaching career at the Urbandale Junior High School, he, later, accepted a position at Valley High School in West Des Moines in 1979. Terry taught math and computer science as well as serving as the girls' head track coach for many years. During his career, he also coached basketball, softball, and cross country.
On June 17, 1995, Terry married Ann K. Ehrsam. They made their home in Urbandale.
An avid sports fan, Terry especially liked to follow the New York Yankees, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Drake Bulldogs. A member of the Drake Bulldog Club, he also joined the NEA, ISEA, and WDMEA while actively teaching. After retiring from teaching, he worked as an usher for the Iowa Cubs.
Terry is survived by his wife, Ann, of Urbandale, two sisters, Patricia (Verlan) Batt, of Stamford, Nebraska, and Peggy (Mark) Pottorff, of Sergeant Bluff; his mother-in-law, Marilyn Ehrsam; his sisters-in-law, Patricia (Dick) Hogan and Sue (Jim) Rohner; and his brother-in-law, Jim (Daveane) Ehrsam, of Greenfield; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers in infancy; and his father-in-law, Robert Ehrsam.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to CROSS Ministries of the Cottage Grove Church or West Des Moines Community Schools Student Scholarships (formerly Dollars for Scholars).
