Gladys Johnson, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died August 1, 2012, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Gladys Bertha Bumann was born on March 26, 1928, near Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Bertha Weber Bumann. She was baptized as an infant in Holstein and later confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Schaller, Iowa.
Growing up, she attended Ida County School and graduated from Hayes Consolidated School in 1946.
On February 8, 1952, she married Ernie Meins. To this union a daughter, Patricia Ann, was born. With Ernie working in sales, they lived in a number of different places until he semi-retired in 1974, and they moved back to Storm Lake. He passed away on June 16, 1980.
Gladys worked in food service for many years at the Buena Vista County Hospital and the Storm Lake Community School system. On August 11, 1988, she married Dennis Johnson. They continued living in Storm Lake where they attended various events, especially those for senior citizens. Dennis passed away on October 11, 2007.
A longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Gladys actively participated in the Altar Guild and the Ladies Aid Society. She enjoyed traveling and gardening. An avid sports fan, she enthusiastically supported Iowa, Iowa State, and the Chicago Cubs.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Patricia (Vince) Harrington; her grandson, Matthew (Nancy) Harrington and her great grandson, Jackson Harrington, of Wheaton, Illinois; four brothers: Marvin (Laura) Bumann, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Bob (Bev) Bumann, of Bradenton, Florida, Lloyd Bumann, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Wendell (Marcella) Bumann, of Omaha, Nebraska; one sister, Fern Combes, of Storm Lake, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: De Ethel Bumann, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Annetta Bumann, of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two brothers: Richard and Luverne Bumann; a sister, Lois Kass; two brothers-in-law: John Kass and Lloyd Combes; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Bumann.
Visitation: 4:00-7:00 p.m., August 05, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., August 06, 2012, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
