Steven Ray Sassman
March 31, 1948 - June 18, 2012Steven R. Sassman, age 64, of Alta, Iowa, died on Monday, June 18, 2012, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Steven Ray Sassman, the son of LeRoy and Joan (Peterson) Sassman, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on March 31, 1948. He spent most of his youth in Alta where he received his education, graduating from Alta High School in 1966.
On June 30, 1967, Steve married Denise Carlson in Albert City, Iowa. They were blessed with three sons: Mike, Todd, and Troy. Steve and Denise spent the first five years of their marriage in Storm Lake. They, then, moved to Alta, where they made their home and raised their family. Steve worked for Hy-Grade in Storm Lake for fifteen years and then drove a delivery truck for the Clear Lake Bakery for the next ten years. He enrolled at Western Iowa Tech, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in nursing, qualifying as an LPN. Steve spent the remainder of his professional career working for the State of Iowa at a facility in Cherokee.
Steve was a long time member of the Alta Fire Department, the Buena Vista County Tea Party, and the Summit Evangelical Free Church. Very talented working with his hands, he thoroughly enjoyed working on cars and attending car shows. Every area of Steve’s life reflected his love for his family. He always enjoyed supporting his grandchildren by attending their activities. Because of his grandchildren, he became a hockey fan in these last years. The quiet manner in which Steve lived his life testified to his personal faith in Christ. Even in the last days of his life, the light of Christ still shone brightly through Him.
Steve’s life, love, and legacy is honored and cherished by his wife of nearly forty-five years, Denise, of Alta, Iowa; his sons: Mike (Linda) Sassman, of Sioux Center, Iowa, Todd (Donette) Sassman, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Troy Sassman, and his fiancée, Robin, of Boone, Iowa; his grandchildren: Zachary, Joshua, Lyndsay, Aaron Sassman, Caleb, Gabriel, Elizabeth, Alaina, and Olivia Sassman; his step-grandchildren: Sarah, Ethan, and Katie Morick; one step-great grandson: Eli Nibbelink; his mother: Joan Sassman, of Alta, Iowa; three brothers: Jim Sassman, of St. George, Utah; Gary Sassman, of Whitewater, Wisconsin; and Kevin Sassman, of Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters: Bev Smith, of Odebolt, Iowa, and Nancy Sanderman, of Schaller, Iowa; as well as nieces; nephews; and other extended family members and many friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, LeRoy; and one brother, Randy.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 21, 2012, at the Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at the Summit Evangelical Free Church in Alta. The arrangements are under the direction of the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
