Iva Hyams
February 14, 1924 - May 27, 2012

Newell, Iowa

Iva Hyams, age 88, of Newell, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Iva Grace Bradbury was born February 14, 1924, in Howard, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Theophilus) Bradbury. She attended school in Howard, South Dakota, graduating from Howard High School in 1942. While in high school, Iva expressed her love of writing by becoming the editor of her high school yearbook and newspaper. Following graduation, she enrolled at the Twin Cities Business College where she earned her degree. She, then, worked at the Twin Cities Arsenal.

Later, she moved to Chicago where she met Dr. John Schut, an Army medical intern, whom she married in 1945. They, subsequently, lived in Chicago, before moving to Washington, D.C., and then to the Minneapolis area. During that time, Iva worked at various secretarial jobs.

While in Minneapolis, Iva shared an apartment with her sisters, Beth and Marie, making many good memories. In 1967, Iva became a corporate secretary at Bechik General Metals.

While working at Bechik in 1971, Iva met Robert Hyams, a widower, who would become the love of her life. On November 24, 1973, she married him. They enjoyed cooking, traveling together, and writing poems and letters to each other. They made their home in the Twin Cities area where they resided their entire married life. Iva was devoted to "her" Bob and lovingly cared for him during his last years with Alzheimer's disease. Her creative writing became a necessary respite during this time, and she joined several writing groups. Iva moved to Storm Lake to be closer to her sister and family, Marie and Byron Crippin, Linda Crippin, Dr. Dave and Glee Crippin, and Alex (Laura) and Nick. After Bob's death in 1993, her Bichon-frise, Kristy Bear, became her constant companion.

An active member of the Storm Lake community, Iva wrote the Inklings Column for the Storm Lake Times and contributed to various writing groups through the Storm Lake Library as well. She especially enjoyed presenting many programs on writing and sharing her teddy bear collection. In 2002, Iva proudly published her work, Inklings, a collection of her poetry and short stories.

Other than writing, Iva especially enjoyed entertaining and gourmet cooking. Surrounded by family and friends, she cherished her time with them. Later, Iva moved to Wel-Life in Alta, Iowa, where she very much felt at home.

Those left to cherish Iva's memory include her step-daughter, Marilyn (Walter) Williams; her step grandchildren: Jeff Mershon, Joseph Leonard, Nancy (Paul) Whissel, Robyn Williams, and Walter Williams; her step-great grandchildren: Molly Whissel and Harrison Whissel; her sisters: June Comstock, of Milbank, South Dakota, Margie Jewell, of Grand Junction, Colorado; Bev Prostrollo, of Deadwood, South Dakota; her sisters-in-law: Lucy Bradbury and Maxine Bradbury; her brother-in-law, Byron Crippin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her special friends: Ron and June Bryan, Bev Edmondson, Marie Herron, and Sally and Jon Ites; as well as many nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Hyams; her step-children: Ruth Hable and Roberta Leonard; her sisters: Sylvia (Bob) Jones, Edna (Ray) Shove, Marie Crippin, and Elizabeth Gensurowsky; her brothers-in-law: Don Prostrollo, Bill Jewell, and Fran Comstock.

Memorial Service: 3:00 p.m., June 07, 2012, at Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa.
