February 10, 1921 - May 20, 2012

Norman L. Robeson, 91, of Cherokee, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Countryside Estates in Cherokee.

Norman was born on February 10, 1921, at Holbrook, Nebraska, to Frank and Elsie (Warner) Robeson. He attended grade school in Nebraska until the eighth grade and then helped his parents work on the farm. After experiencing a seven-year drought in Nebraska, the family moved to Iowa to farm.

Norman entered the Army Air Force, serving his country during WW II. Traveling by ship from the United States East Coast, he went to India where planes were loaded with supplies to fly over "The Hump" into China. After his service there, his ship continued on to the United States West Coast.

After the war, Norman married Wanda Beazley on June 15, 1946, at Sioux City. The couple had one daughter, Joyce, in 1949. During this time, Norman worked at the Ford garage in Storm Lake. Later, the family moved to Washta to begin a farming career and then to Cherokee where they stayed until Norman went into the nursing home at the end of 2008.

Norman enjoyed music, playing the guitar, and pitching horseshoes on a team in his younger days. He liked to weld, go to dances, and play cards in a card club. He lived a simple lifestyle and loved farming. A patient and loving husband, father, and friend, he was a member of the Quimby United Methodist Church and L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Myrtle Hicks Robeson; his wife, Wanda, on January 4, 2012; his sisters, Helen Foss and Wanda Marie Robeson; his brother, Ivan Robeson, his sister-in-law, Peg Robeson; and his brothers-in-law, George Simon and Judd Foss.

He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Kuhrts, of Alta; his sister, Shirley Simon, of Sioux Rapids; his brother, Frank "Junior" Robeson, and his wife, Carla, of Newton; and his sisters-in-law, Lela Warner, and her husband, Delmar, of Storm Lake, and Eula Mae Best, and her husband, Ralph, of Oxford, Nebraska; as well as several nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Rev. Carolyn Hollar officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset View Cemetery at Washta, Iowa. The L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. will conduct the military rites at the graveside.
