James Otto
October 9, 1944 - March 25, 2012James Miller Otto, age 67, of Spirit Lake, died on March 25, 2012. He was born on October 9, 1944, in Storm Lake to Earl and Eleanor (Miller) Otto.
He graduated from Storm Lake High School, completed his undergraduate studies at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Seward, Nebraska. He later earned his Masters at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Jim married Janet Mae Harvey on April 13, 1968, in Seward, Nebraska. They lived first in Emerson, Nebraska, and then in Spirit Lake since 1976. Jim worked as a teacher, principal, retail/business owner, RTA Driver, and a 911 dispatcher.
Jim was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He participated in Boy Scouts, on the Library Board, with the Volunteer Fire Department, and with the Iowa DNR Gill Netting Program.
He enjoyed all aspects of nature. He liked snorkeling, fishing, hiking, canoeing, boating, geocaching, and Boy Scouting as well as reading, volunteering, tinkering, doing genealogy, and playing with his grandchildren. He had an interest in technology.
Jim is survived by his wife, Janet; his daughter, Julie (David) McAdon, of Adel; his sons, David (Jen) Otto, of West Des Moines, and Douglas (Jennifer) Otto, of Lake Park; his grandchildren, Emma and Christian McAdon, and Madelyn, Addison, and Abby Otto; his mother, Eleanor Otto, of Storm Lake; his sister, Nancy (Craig) Sargent, of Storm Lake; his brother, Bruce (Jane) Otto, of Storm Lake, and six nieces.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Otto, and his father, Earl Otto.
A funeral service for Jim Otto was held Friday, March 30, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial was at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery.
