Storm Lake, Iowa

Lois Moritz of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at her home in Storm Lake.

Lois Faye Sorenson was born on October 27, 1928, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Ivan and Violet (Hatch) Sorenson. So very tiny at a little over two pounds, she was brought home in a shoebox. Raised by her Grandma and Grandpa Hatch on a farm near Nemaha, Iowa, she attended and graduated from Nemaha High School in 1947.

While roller-skating, she met the love of her life, Curtis Moritz. On September 18, 1950, they married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with four children: Timothy, Steve, Lori, and Scott.

A parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Lois was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and a prayer line volunteer. She also joined the Sparklers, an organization of the wives of the Storm Lake Firemen. Moreover, she enjoyed her membership in the women’s bowling league.

Lois worked as a telephone operator from 1950-1954. After her children had grown, she worked at Siefer Consultants, the Storm Lake Pilot Tribune, and the Storm Lake Times.

In her spare time, Lois loved to sew, knit, crochet, and quilt. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, and putting together puzzles. She also loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports, dance, and perform in extracurricular activities. An avid sports fan, she especially enjoyed playing basketball in high school. Her senior year, she and her team even qualified for the state tournament, a special thrill.

Lois loved traveling. Over the years, she traveled to Nevada several times to visit her sister and many times to Chicago to see her daughter and family. She treasured her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Curtis Moritz, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children: Tim (Cindy) Moritz, Steve (Tami) Moritz, and Scott Moritz, all of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Lori (Mike) Sippel, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; her grandchildren: Erica (Eric) Loerts, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sarah (Mark) Schau, of Pacific Junction, Iowa, Christa Moritz, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Cassie Moritz, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Alison, Julia, Mary Kate, and Rebecca Sippel, all of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; her step grandchild, Keri Kjartanson, of Rogers, Arkansas; her great grandchildren: Alex, Sam, and Zach Loerts and Gavin and Maya Schau; her step great grandchildren: Donnie and Nick Kjartanson; her sister: Alice (Ernie) Relford, of Fallon, Nevada; her sisters-in-law, Nancy (Fred Hall) Peters, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Darlene (Ray) Snyder, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and her brother-in-law, Robert Moritz, of Boone, Iowa; as well as extended family and many friends.
