Charles Agler, age 90, of Marathon, Iowa, died March 16, 2012, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Charles Wayne “Buck” Agler, the son of Leslie and Nina (Blomquist) Agler, was born January 3, 1922, at home on a farm near Marathon. He attended school in Marathon, graduating in 1940. Then, he attended Buena Vista College for two years before entering the Army Air Force with the 301st Troop Carrier Squadron. He served his country proudly overseas in England and France as a glider mechanic and co-pilot.

On October 12, 1946, he married Ila Josephson in Storm Lake. They were the parents of two children, Larry and Diane. A farmer who also worked at Mefferd Industries, Charles spent his entire life in the Marathon area.

A member of Grace Lutheran Church, he also served on the church council. Civic minded, he coached Little League baseball, served on the election board for eighteen years, enjoyed helping with the Marathon-to-Marathon, and did volunteer work whenever needed in the community. He enjoyed gardening and playing cards with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Ila; his son, Larry (Sandy) Agler, of Oaktown, Indiana; his daughter, Diane Rettig, of Spencer, Iowa; his sister, Mildred (Don) Cox, of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren: Shawn Rettig (Ronni Perkins), Chris (Jane) Rettig, Missy (Matt) Loyet, and Troy (Rebecca) Robertson; eleven great grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Les Pautsch; and his sisters-in-law, Delores Christianson and Nola Josephson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ronald.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Burial will follow in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present to greet friends. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
