Harlan Kies, age 60, of Newell, Iowa, died February 13, 2012, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Harlan Wayne Kies was born September 25, 1951, in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Harold and Arlene (Lussman) Kies. He was baptized on October 14, 1951, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, Iowa, and later confirmed in 1965 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell.

Growing up, Harlan attended grade school in Newell and graduated from Newell Providence High School in 1969. Following high school graduation, he attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

On February 14, 1976, Harlan married Sandra Lynch in Albert City, Iowa. They were blessed with five children: Jamie, Melissa, Pam, Brandon, and Travis.

Harlan was a lifelong farmer and trucker. He had a passion for driving the tour bus for Buena Vista University basketball games. In his spare time, he enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Harlan treasured spending time with his family and friends and will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and quick smile.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sandra Kies, of Newell, Iowa; his children: Jamie Kies, of Newell, Iowa, Melissa (Tom) Payne, of Mason City, Iowa, Pam (Corey) Manary, of Tiffin, Iowa, Brandon (Jessie) Kies, of Spencer, Iowa, and Travis (Hanna) Kies, of Mason City, Iowa; his grandchildren: Samantha and Haley Kies, Colton and Lexi Payne, and Tayah and Caydren Manary; his brothers: Francis (Carolyn) Kies, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Alan (Dana) Kies, of Tacoma, Washington, Ken (Carol) Kies, of Newell, Iowa, and Russ (Donna) Kies, of Fonda, Iowa; his sisters: Violet (Jack) Thraen, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Gladys (Gene) Mandernach, of Lakeside, Iowa; as well as nieces; nephews; extended family and many friends.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Arlene Kies.

Visitation: 5:00-8:00 p.m., February 16, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., February 17, 2012, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: February 17, 2012, at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
