Luetta Reese, age 76, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on December 3, 2011, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Luetta May Zeilger, the daughter of Lloyd and Lucille (Hersom) Zeilger, was born in Emmetsburg, Iowa, on May 28, 1935. She grew up on a farm between Mallard and Emmetsburg. Involved in 4-H in Palo Alto County, she participated in clothing and food nutrition projects. She attended country school through the eighth grade in Palo Alto County and then high school in Emmetsburg, graduating in 1953. She continued her education at Emmetsburg Junior College and Iowa State Teacher’s College, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, before completing her studies at Buena Vista College. Following college, Luetta taught fourth and fifth grade in Plover, Iowa, and later sixth grade in Lohrville, Iowa.

On May 26, 1957, Luetta married Melvin J. Reese at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children: Arlene, Darwin, Mary, and Carol. After their marriage, they farmed near Rolfe and Rodman, Iowa. From 1963 to 1978, Melvin and Luetta farmed in the Webb and Marathon vicinity. During the summer of 1978, they moved to their current farm near Sioux Rapids where Luetta was still residing. Throughout her life, Luetta maintained her interest in 4-H through her children and grandchildren. In addition, she taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the Ladies Circle, the Friendship Circle, the card club and Bible studies.

Luetta’s life will always be cherished and celebrated by her children: her son, Darwin Reese, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; and her three daughters: Arlene (Avery) Simoens, of St. Peter, Missouri, Mary (Paul) Struss, of Courtland, Minnesota, and Carol Elliott, of Spencer, Iowa; her six grandchildren: Becky and Mitch Simoens, of St. Peter, Missouri, Megan and Matthew Struss, of Courtland, Minnesota, and John and Sam Elliott, of Spencer, Iowa; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Art (Shirley) Zeigler, of Holtville, California, and Bill (Nancy) Zeigler, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her brother-in-law: Lyle (Linda) Reese; her two sisters-in-law: Iva Williams and Vera Brown; as well as aunts; nieces; nephews; cousin; and other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents: her husband, Melvin, on August 27, 1997; and her son-in-law, Bob Elliott, in February, 1997.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 8, 2011, at the Sioux Rapids Baptist Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
