Mona R. Kinney, age 61, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the North Lake Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Mona Rae McLaughlin, the daughter of Lester Eugene “Red” and Henrieta (Fischer) McLaughlin, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on August 23, 1950. She lived her youth and received her education in Storm Lake, graduating with the Class of 1968. Following graduation, Mona worked in a canning factory in Storm Lake before attending a business college in Des Moines, Iowa. She continued her education in manpower classes in Lincoln, Nebraska. While residing in Lincoln, Mona worked at the Hilton Hotel and the Villager Hotel. She returned to Storm Lake and was employed at the Lamplighter Motel and Motel Vista for three years. She kept very busy babysitting for families in Storm Lake and cleaning businesses and homes in the community.

On December 2, 1978, Mona married Robert Kinney in the chapel of the Buena Vista Manor where Bob’s mother was residing. For twenty-eight years, Bob and Mona made their home at 702 Vestal Street in Storm Lake where Mona was a bookkeeper for Bob’s painting business.

Mona had many hobbies which included doing needle point, counting cross stitch, and making latch hook rugs. She loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. Her favorite pastime was watching car races on television. She had many friends throughout the United States, and she took a special interest in regularly writing letters to all of them. Her family and friends held a special place in her heart, and she was proud of the picture collection she had of them all.

Mona’s life will be remembered and cherished by her family which includes her two sisters: Ardis and Henry Gadeken, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Joy Phillips of Bella Vista, Arkansas; her brother, Dennis McLaughlin, of Lake View, Iowa; and a special nephew, Ken Roberts; along with many other nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her half-sister, Jerri Jean.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 26, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation with the family present will take place Friday, November 25, 2011, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
