Merle Bihrer, age 81, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died November 29, 2011, in Storm Lake.

Merle Clarence Bihrer was born October 1, 1930, in Odebolt, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Ella Jean (Boom) Bihrer. He graduated from Sac City High School in 1948.

On July 14, 1956, Merle married Shirley A. Brown in Sac City, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: Steve, Scott, and Sherrie.

After honorably serving in the Marine Corps, Merle worked at Nobles Popcorn for approximately ten years until landing his dream job with the United States Postal Service in Storm Lake from which he retired after thirty-one years.

Merle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and the Storm Lake Lions Club.

He loved all sports, especially football and baseball. He thoroughly enjoyed the Chicago Bears and Cubs, the New York Yankees, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. For nearly three decades, Merle worked the chain crew at Storm Lake High School football games. He was very active in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Scott (Special friend, Sarah Kapustka) Bihrer, of Urbandale, Iowa, and Sherrie (Rich) Sassman, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his daughter-in-law, Kim Bihrer, of Orange City, Iowa; his three grandchildren: Dalton and Dylan Sassman and Keatyn Bihrer; a brother, Floyd (Marge) Bihrer, of Sac City, Iowa; a sister, Sandra (Kenny) Brown, of Boise, Idaho; and a close family friend to Dylan, Samantha Hamer; as well as extended family and friends.

Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Bihrer; his parents, Clarence and Ella Jean Bihrer; his son, Steven Bihrer; and an infant brother, Jackie Lou.

Visitation: 5:00-7:00 p.m., December 02, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., December 03, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Interment: 1:00 p.m., December 03, 2011, at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, Iowa.
