Carma Darlene (Yaw) Anderson was born December 6, 1929, in Alta, to Russel and Evelyn Yaw. Carma was baptized and confirmed into the Trinity Church where she worshipped through age 19.
She attended and graduated from the Alta Consolidated Schools. As a student there, she took part in many activities and received the Conner award in recognition for her outstanding citizenship, scholarship, and leadership. While in school, she also worked in several local businesses.
After graduating in 1947, she was employed in the office of Dr. Nobles as records clerk and receptionist. On Dec. 20, 1948, she married Glen B. Anderson and moved to Pammel Ct. (veterans housing), in Ames, while Glen attended college. Carma was a records clerk at Iowa State University Hospital. In 1951, they moved to Pocahontas where she worked as secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. After the birth of their first son, Steve, she became a stay at home mom.
The family moved to Humboldt, where a second son, Tom, was born in 1954. They, then, moved to Spencer followed by moves to Galesburg, Illinois, and later to Iowa City. In 1969, Glen accepted a position with the ISU Extension Program in Boone, and Carma worked in the local K-6 school system until her retirement. Carma and Glen spent their summers at Okoboji and winters in Mesa, Arizona. Retirement travels included cruises, guided bus tours, and a trip to Sweden. Of course, they also spent much time enjoying family.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2006, Carma is survived by her sons, Steve and Tom, and his wife, Vicki; her grandsons, Ryan, Nathan, and Mathew; and her sister-in-law, Arlene Anderson, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, Glen Anderson, brother, Ray Yaw, and sister-in-law, Kay Yaw.
Memorial Services will be at held at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta on Saturday, October 8, 2011. Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2011, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. at the Schuchert Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.
The family requests memorials to be directed to the Building Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 5, Alta, Iowa.
