Wayne Wrede
December 28, 1921 - July 13, 2011

Monday, July 25, 2011

Wayne Kenneth Wrede, age 89, of Alta, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the Methodist Manor of Storm Lake. A funeral service was held on Monday, July 18, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Storm Lake with Rev. Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial was at the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery of rural Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of the arrangements.

Wayne was born on December 28, 1921, on his family's farm eight and a half miles south of Alta to Herman and Emma Wrede. He was born on the 3rd birthday of his twin sisters, Luverne and Lorene.

He was baptized on January 12, 1922, and confirmed on March 31, 1936, at St John’s Lutheran Church of Hanover. He attended rural elementary school in the Hanover community and graduated from Alta High School in 1940.

Wayne married Geneva L Juergens on May 7, 1944. They had four children: Dennis, Dale and Diane (twins), and Gary. During their forty-four year loving marriage, Wayne and Geneva enjoyed their families, friends, farming, and the Hanover community.

Wayne was "grounded" on the farm. He spent most of his life tilling the soil and looking forward to harvest. Feeling most comfortable on wheels, he loved to drive the tractor, the lawn mower, and the car. On road trips, he saw oceans, forests, and mountains, but his heart and home were always centered on the farmlands of Iowa. He called his field of green oats waving in the wind, his "sea of green."

Following the death of his wife, Geneva, on November 13, 1988, he met and later married Betty Cone of Alta on August 25, 1990. They had nineteen years together until her death on August 26, 2009. Betty's quick wit and loving heart brought the extended families together.

Wayne loved fishing, hunting, dancing, enjoying several sports, and playing cards with family and friends. Most of all, he will be remembered as a man who loved his family and who strongly believed in participating in their daily lives.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Luverne (Lietz), and his wives, Geneva and Betty, and Betty's son, Tom Kone.

Wayne is survived by his sister Lorene Heimsoth (Storm Lake), his sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Willie Wrede (Brandon, South Dakota), Dale and Lidia Wrede (Corpus Christi, Texas), and Gary and Deb Wrede (Tiffin, Iowa); his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bob Peterson (Mankato, Minnesota); all his loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. He is also survived by Betty’s children: her daughter and her husband, Linda and Dennis Brechwald (Spencer) and her son and his wife, Marlin and Linda Cone (Weatherby Lake, Missouri), and a daughter-in-law, Susan Kone of Washington.
