Hattie Sump
October 01, 1920 - July 23, 2011

Storm Lake, Iowa

Hattie Sump, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Hedwig (Hattie) Aura (Franzmeier) Sump was born on October 1, 1920, to Rudolf and Bertha (Hoberman) Franzmeier on their family farm eight miles north of Newell. She was baptized and later confirmed on May 19, 1935. Her confirmation Bible verse was John 5:24, “Very truly I tell you; whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” Hattie attended Zion Lutheran School until the eighth grade. Her teen years were spent with her sister working for neighbors and friends babysitting and cleaning.

On November 28, 1943, she married Wilbert Sump at the Zion Lutheran Church. They farmed east of Truesdale where Hattie loved to mow and raise beautiful cannas. She kept an immaculate house and, with her contagious laugh, always made everyone feel at ease. In January of 1979, she and Wilbert retired and moved to Storm Lake. Wilbert passed away August 23, 1987.

Hattie always regretted never being able to have children of her own, but she was an additional mom and grandma to her many nieces and nephews and their families. She knew all of their names and birthdays from generation to generation.

Hattie was a strong, Christian woman who loved to sing and knew most of the words to hymns by heart. A lifelong member of Ladies Aid, she also still thoroughly enjoyed attending each Christmas luncheon. In addition, she loved not only listening to but also contributing to the Lutheran Hour.

She made the best pies, especially raisin cream and coconut cream pies, coffee cake, cinnamon rolls, and sugar cookies, and she loved to share them with family, friends and fellow church members. Hattie embroidered many pieces. She loved playing cards and visiting with others. She especially loved little children and babies.

Hattie will always be remembered as a loving and caring sister to Otto Franzmeier of Albert City, Iowa; as an aunt to Myron (Dorothy) Franzmeier of Storm Lake, Iowa, Elaine VanderBroek of Monroe, Iowa, Judy (Ben) Malcom of Storm Lake, Iowa, Jean (Del) Carlson of Albert City, Iowa, Janet (Rick) Meyer of Alta, Iowa, Bruce Franzmeier of Clarion, Iowa, Joyce (Mick) Vitzhum, of Delight, Arkansas, Susan Schumacher of Brookings, South Dakota, Diane Oplinger of Columbus, Nebraska, Carol (Ron) Buske of Albert City, Iowa, and Jim (Leslie) Franzmeier of Newell, Iowa; and to all their children and grandchildren whom she adored; and many friends.

In heaven, she has joined her beloved husband, Wilbert, and their three little babies; her parents: Rudolf and Bertha Franzmeier; her sister and her husband, Anna and Eldor Sump; her brothers and their wives: Ewald and Annie Franzmeier, Eldon and Darlene Franzmeier, and Edwin and Lorna Franzmeier; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Franzmeier; an infant brother, Wilbert; an infant sister, Anita; her brothers and sisters-in-laws: Walt and Verna Sump, Martin and Matilda Sump, and Edwin and Lois Sump.
