Irene Eickman, age 92, of Fonda died Sunday, November 21, 2004, at Marshall, Minnesota.

Mary Irene (Lenahan) Eickman was born May 31, 1912, at Newell. She was the daughter of John J. and Mary (McNamara) Lenahan. She grew up on the family farm south of Newell and attended school in Newell. After graduating from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, she taught for many years in country schools as well as in Schaller and Lake View.

On January 3, 1946, she married Edwin Eickman at St. Mary's Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. They lived on the Eickman farm four miles east of Fonda. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and reading. She took special pleasure in visiting with her children and grandchildren. A highlight of her later years was a trip to Ireland with three of her daughters. Irene belonged to the Catholic Daughters, the Holy Family Society, and the Little Flower Missionary Society.

She and her husband moved to a home in Fonda in 1992. In March of 2000, she became a resident of the Fonda care center. She moved to the Marshall, Minnesota, nursing home in March of 2004, where she passed away.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert, and infant brother, Dennis Lenahan; and her husband, Ed, in 2003.

She is survived by her five children: Patricia Birk (Ken Yeggy), of Iowa City, Kathleen Weishaar (Mark), of Malvern, Pennsylvania, Janet Healy (Mike), of Marshall, Minnesota, Sally Sauter (Jack), of Rancho Mirage, California, and James Eickman (Cathy), of Mountain Home, Arkansas.

Also surviving are twelve grandchildren: Chris Birk, Gretchen Yeggy, Michael Weishaar, Angela Weishaar Maycock, Katie Weishaar, Jim Healy, Colleen Healy, Carolyn Healy, Julia Sauter, Laura Sauter, Bill Eickman and Jay Eickman; her brother-in-law, Leonard Eickman, and her sisters-in-law, Rose Eickman and Sr. Maristella Eickman. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.

A Mass of Christian burial for Irene Eickman will be held Saturday, November 27, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda with Father Thomas Hart officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Fonda under the direction of the Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda.
