April 20, 1913 - November 19, 2004

Jean Peterson passed away on November 19, 2004, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake at the age of 91 years, six months, and thirty days.

Alice Jean Peterson was born on April 20, 1913, to Rev. A.J. and Frances (Brown) Barkley in Merrill. She attended school in several communities in northwest Iowa and graduated from Farnhamville High School in 1931.

Jean attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI) in Cedar Falls, earning degrees in music and elementary education. She began teaching at Highview Consolidated Schools in 1935. She also taught in Mechanicsville, Estherville, and Cedar Rapids.

On August 26, 1945, she married Melvin Peterson in Smithland. They, subsequently, settled on the family farm north of Alta. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Miriam.

Jean was active in the community, both in the country and also in Alta after they retired in 1976. She taught piano lessons to many children, directed choirs, and accompanied vocalists. She was an active member of several groups, including the Nokomis Study Club at Trinity Lutheran Church. In the 1970's, she taught English to recently immigrated Laotians. Jean also collected sea shells and presented programs about them.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin brother, John Barkley, and his wife, Edna; one sister, Evelyn Barkley; two brothers-in-law, Bob Martin and Vincent Peterson, and his wife, Dorothy.

Jean is survived by her husband, Melvin, of Alta; one daughter, Miriam, and her husband, Don Baker, of Cedar Falls; two grandsons, Lee Baker, and his wife, Amy, of Eugene, Oregon, and Brandon Baker, of Denver, Colorado; one sister, Ada Marie, of Spirit Lake; one brother-in-law, Pastor Ordell Peterson, and his wife, Dorothy, of Rock Island, Illinois; seven nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
