George Simon, age 80, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Sioux Care Center at Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Raymond George Simon, the son of Firman and Mary (Pfeiffer) Simon was born in Early, Iowa, on September 12, 1930. He moved with his family to Sioux Rapids in 1932. George attended the Sioux Rapids Consolidated School, graduating with the Class of 1948. Following his high school graduation, George enlisted in the United States Army and served his country faithfully from January 31, 1951, to February 1, 1954.

On April 30, 1955, George married Shirley Ann Robeson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. This couple was blessed with five children: Michael, Steven, Nancy, Patrick, and Brian Mark, who died in infancy.

George devoted his lifetime to his farming vocation. They spent their married life farming in the Linn Grove and Sioux Rapids areas. In addition to grain farming, George also raised cattle. He was a school bus driver in Brooke Township and worked at Simonsen Iron Works until he retired from there in 1995.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Sioux Rapids Historical Society. George's special pastimes included: playing cards, traveling, and having coffee with his friends. He cherished the time he could spend with his family, enjoying life on his farm and spending the winter months in Arizona.

George’s life will always be honored and cherished by the members of his family which include his wife, Shirley Simon, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his children: Michael Simon, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Steven (Karla) Simon, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Nancy Simon, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Patrick (Mary) Simon, of Altoona, Iowa; his five grandsons: Tyler, Ryan, Logan, Alex, and Harrison; his two brothers: Al Simon, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Paul (Betty) Simon, of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; his sister, Mary Ann Wilson, of Cortez, Colorado; his brother-in-law, Norman (Wanda) Robeson, of Cherokee, Iowa; his sister- and brother-in-law, Eula Mae and Ralph Best, of Oxford, Nebraska; and many nieces and nephews; as well as other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Brian Mark; his sister, Caroline; four brothers: Amos, Francis, Don, and Clarence; his sisters-in-law: Helen Simon, Nelva Dawn Simon, Betty Simon, Peg Robeson, and Helen Foss; his brothers-in-law: Bill Wilson, Ivan Robeson, Judd Foss, Homer Lancaster; and his father- and mother-in-law, Frank and Elsie Robeson.

Memorial services will take place on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 4, 2011, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids where the family will be present the entire time. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to George’s family.
