Ruby Porter, age 89, of Albert City, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died June 17, 2011, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Ruby Elaine Hansen, the daughter of Harry and Clara (Lund) Hansen, was born on a farm in Sharon Township, Audubon County, Iowa, on March 22, 1922. She was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church northeast of Kimballton, Iowa, and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. She attended several country schools in Audubon County before attending the Audubon High School for one year. At the age of 51, Ruby earned a GED diploma.

During her adult years, she was employed at National Handcraft, Bishop’s Cafeteria, and Broadlawn Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ruby married Walter W. Porter on October 16, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed to share thirty-seven years together. They resided in Des Moines and later moved to Norwalk, Iowa, in 1959. Ruby was a homemaker and an active church member in Norwalk. In her leisure time, she enjoyed ceramics, playing cards and bingo, and working in her garden and with her flowers.

Ruby moved to Storm Lake in 1990 to help care for her mother. She later resided at the McCord Manor in Storm Lake prior to entering the Pleasant View Nursing Home.

Ruby’s life will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her sisters: Dolores (Darwin) Johnson, of Albert City, Iowa, and Vivian Barels, of Storm Lake, Iowa; as well as by many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Donald Hansen.

Memorials may be given in Ruby’s memory to the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.
