Mathilda Sump, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, in Storm Lake.

Mathilda E. Buchholz was born August 31, 1918, in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, the daughter of William and Malinda (Hoberman) Buchholz.

As an infant, Mathilda was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church by Reverend Frank Albrecht. She attended Zion Parochial School and was confirmed on March 20, 1932, by Reverend Frank Albrecht.

Following confirmation, she helped her parents on the farm until she married Martin Sump on February 7, 1937, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Reverend William Schuelke officiating. Together, they started farming near Truesdale, but in a few years moved to a farm near Zion so their three children could attend the Parochial School. There she and Martin resided until they retired and moved to Storm Lake.

Mathilda loved being a wife, a mother, and a lover of God’s Word. She sang in the church choir for forty years, taught Sunday school, was a member of Ladies Aid, and a community volunteer. She worked at the Buena Vista County Hospital for twenty-five years as a Ward Secretary and later helped with E.S.L. classes.

Mathilda enjoyed baking and gardening. She loved sewing and making quilts. Mathilda truly loved her Savior, her husband, her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Her main concern was their happiness and that they would all love Jesus. Only through illness did she not attend God’s House.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Karen Sump, of St. Paul, Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Joyce (Ron) Nehring, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Candace Sump, Melissa Cerda, Tracy Denney, and Dawn Betsill; her seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and her sisters-in-law, Hattie Sump and Arlene Petersen; as well as extended family and many friends.

Mathilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Martin Sump; her son, Merle; her daughter, Shirley; her grandchildren: Craig and Tonya; her brothers, Arnold and Aaron; and her sister, Marie.

Visitation: 5-8:00 p.m. May 24, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. May 25, 2011, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: May 25, 2011, at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Storm Lake, Iowa.
