February 22, 1928 - September 13, 2004

Verva M. Carlson, age 76, of Albert City, died Monday, September 13, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Verva Mae Hemm was born on February 22, 1928, in Fairfield township. She was the daughter of Ralph Edward Hemm and Helen Edna Mae Johnson Hemm. On May 10, 1942, she was confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. After graduating from Albert City High School in 1946, Verva married Roy Emanuel Carlson on November 17, 1946. They, subsequently, farmed in the Albert City area for thirty years. They were the proud parents of six children.

After they moved to Albert City, Verva worked as a waitress, a dietitian, and a nurse's aid. She volunteered for many church and community organizations. A lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, she served on the church council and became an active member of WELCA. She also joined the Albert City Historical Society, the Albert City Threshernmen Association, the Thursday Apron Club, and The Happy Hour Club, all of Albert City. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, and reading.

Survivors are: her children, Delmar Carlson, and his wife Jean (Albert City), Denise Sassman, and her husband, Steve (Alta), Deb Travis, and her husband, Jim (Mallard), Darla Vonnahme, and her husband, Dan (Mallard), and Doyle Carlson, and his wife, Sherry (Fort Dodge); fourteen grandchildren: Michael & Kathy Sassman (Dakota Dunes, South Dakota), Todd & Wendy Sassman, (Lawton), Troy & Pam Sassman (Dyersville), Jennifer Reddel (Ankeny), Jill Carlson (Aurora, Illinois), John Carlson (Ames), Scott & Missy Travis (Newton), Jamie Travis (Urbandale), Alicia & Zachery Eichmeir (Ankeny), Sarah Vonnahme (West Des Moines), Patrick Vonnahme (Ames), Amber Vonnahme (Mallard), Emily Hepperle (Fort Dodge), and Eric Hepperle (Fort Dodge); eleven great grandchildren: Zachary, Joshua, Lyndsay, and Arron Sassman, Caleb Sassman, Cole and Connor Travis, Carter Reddel, Alaina and Olivia Sassman, and Avery Eichmier; her sister, Ivalee Arrowsmith (Perry), her brother-in-law, Carl Carlson (Albert City), and her sister-in-law, Florence Porath (Albert City).

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; and her daughter, Daryls.

Funeral services for Verva M. Carlson were held Thursday, September 16 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial was in the Fairfield Township Cemetery. The Sliefert Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
