Oliver Aronson
September 18, 1912 - April 26, 2011Oliver Aronson, age 98, of Albert City, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Carl Axel Oliver Aronson, the son of Andrew and Elsa (Blomberg) Aronson, was born in Albert City, Iowa, on September 18, 1912. He attended Marshall Township Country School through the eighth grade and then went to work on the family farm. Oliver was drafted into the United States Army in March of 1942. He served his country in the European Theatre as a combat medic, taking part in the Normandy invasion on D-Day. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945.
On November 21, 1945, Oliver married Mary Arminta Stroup at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Albert City. This union was blessed with six children: Samuel, David, Paul, James (Jim), Laura, and Timothy.
Oliver spent 20 years farming south of Albert City and then worked at the local feed mill until his retirement. He also worked as the church janitor for many years. On several occasions, Oliver assisted as a lay pastor at the church.
He was an avid gardener and sewed several quilts. Oliver had a special love for baking, especially rye bread which he baked every week for many years. An active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, he enjoyed singing in the choir as well as serving as a deacon, lector, and usher. He also loved singing in the Community Choir during the Christmas and Easter seasons. A member of the Dyvad-Gustafson American Legion Post #299, Oliver will be remembered as a quiet, hard working man.
Those who will always love and cherish Oliver’s life include his children: Samuel Aronson, of Albert City, Iowa, David (Shar) Aronson, of Albert City, Iowa, Paul Aronson, of Alta, Iowa, James (Reatha) Aronson, of Waterloo, Iowa, Timothy Aronson, of Alta, Iowa, and Laura (Rod) Morgan, of Rembrandt, Iowa; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Mavis Aronson, of Albert City, Iowa; his two sisters, Lillian Schultz, of Laurens, Iowa, and Olivia Cole, of Seattle, Washington; his sisters-in-law: Betty Aronson, Bernell Aronson, Maureen Schmidt, and Delores Stroup; his brother-in-law, Milton Hough; and several nieces and nephews as well as extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; two sisters, Viola (Fred) Meyer, and Sylvia (Harry) Schultz; three brothers: Conrad, Robert, and Martin (Darlene) Aronson; and members of Mary’s family which include: brothers-in-law: Fred Cole, Roy Schultz, Harry (Erma) Levene, John (Geneva) Julif, Ralph (Beulah) Walters, Walt (Kate) Behrens, June Hough; Dean Stroup; George Stroup; Harry Stroup; Warren (Nellie) Stroup; Dale Stroup; and Bob Stroup.
Funeral service will be Friday, April 29, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place Thursday, April 28, 2011, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
