September 15, 1918 - April 6, 2011Doris C. Soderquist, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa, died April 6, 2011, at the Pocahontas Manor in Pocahontas, Iowa.
Doris Catherine Hultgren, the daughter of C. Henry and Myrtle (Nixon) Hultgren, was born on September 15, 1918, in Alta, Iowa.
When she was two years old, they moved to Sioux City, then to Colorado, and later to Los Angeles, California, where Henry could utilize his carpentry and cabinet-making skills. She had many memories of traveling on Old Route 66 in a Model T. Roadster. Her education was primarily in California where she graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles. Following her high school graduation, she attended Los Angeles College for one year.
On February 5, 1938, Doris married Roland Soderquist in Los Angeles. They were blessed with two sons: Dennis, who’s life was brief, and Donn. Their daughter, Karen, arrived later to make their family complete. After years on the Soderquist family farm, illness plagued Roland, and they moved to California where he died in 1955. Doris married Milton Soderquist on December 26, 1959, in Temple City, California. He brought his daughter, Marilyn, into the family, and Doris and Karen returned to Albert City.
Following Milton’s death in 1980, Doris attended several Elderhostels and enjoyed traveling and appreciating nature and the outdoors that she captured in many of her paintings. She also enjoyed music and singing in the church choir as long as she was able.
Over the years, Doris worked as an artist, a receptionist, a bookkeeper for their S and A Garage, a dietary aide at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City and a server assistant and art work creator at the Hannah Marie Country Inn of rural Spencer. An active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, Doris was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She was a past member of the Albert City Library Board, Our Savior’s Church Choir and the Witter Gallery in Storm Lake. She served on the Albert City Apartments Board, joined the Young at Heart Club, the H.O.A. Club, and the Albert City Improvement Corporation. In addition, She subscribed to the Iowa Artists Directory and became an honorary member of the Thursday Study Club and the Florence Ceramic Society. Doris enjoyed volunteering at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, the Buena Vista County Hospital coffee shop, the friendship gatherings at Cutty’s of Okoboji, and assisting with the Albert City Dinner Date program.
She found joy in her church, family and friends. In 1996, she wrote and published her book of memories entitled Celebrating Life and distributed it to many family members. Doris attended her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s programs and sporting events as often as possible. Special family occasions, such as birthday parties, were important to her. She also kept in touch with her many friends, both near and far.
