Frances L. Taphorn, age 74, of Alta, Iowa, and formerly of Ida Grove, Iowa, died March 13, 2011, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Frances L. Quirin was born April 14, 1936, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Thelma (Schweizer) Quirin. She was baptized at Emmanuel Reform Church in Schaller, Iowa, and later confirmed in 1958 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Growing up, she attended Hayes consolidated schools where she graduated in 1953. Following graduation, Frances worked at the Telephone office in Storm Lake.

On June 2, 1956, Frances was united in marriage to Ray Taphorn at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with two sons, Allen and Keith.

While Frances was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, she sang in the church choir for 40 years, taught CCD for 18 years, became a member of the Altar Society, and served as a lay minister. After joining St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake in 1999, she sang in the Caritas choir and again served as a lay minister.

Frances enjoyed crafts, crocheting, scrapbooking, cooking and making jewelry, and ceramics. She loved growing and arranging flowers. She treasured her family, especially her grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Ray, of Alta, Iowa; her children: Allen (Kris) Taphorn, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Keith (Nancy) Taphorn, of Aurora, Colorado; her grandchildren: Erin (Dan) Nguyen, Collin Taphorn, Matthew Taphorn, and Carly Taphorn; her brother, Ed (Charlene) Quirin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her sisters: Margaret (Don) Binder, of Alta, Iowa, and Charlotte (Floyd) Binder, of Rembrandt, Iowa; a special lifelong friend, Susan Miller, of Ida Grove, Iowa; as well as extended family and friends.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Thelma Quirin; her parents-in-law, John and Helen Taphorn; and her nephew, Kent Binder.

Visitation: 3-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. March 17, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 1:00 p.m. March 18, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m. March 17, 2011, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: March 18, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
