Frances A. Olney, age 76, of Marathon, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at Spencer, Iowa.

Frances A. Evans, the daughter of Francis Rice and Della (Larkins) Evans, was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, on May 27, 1934. At the age of two, Fran moved with her family to a farm in the Des Moines and Waukee, Iowa, area. Fran began her education at the Pierce Country School and later graduated from Waukee High School. She continued her education at Drake University in Des Moines where she received her teaching certificate. Fran, subsequently, taught school at Jamaica, Iowa, and in West Des Moines, Iowa.

On December 23, 1956, Fran was united in marriage to Norris Olney, Jr, at the Methodist Church in West Des Moines. This couple was blessed with six children: Joan, Lesle, William Richard, Michael, and Jayne. Following their marriage, they resided in West Des Moines while Norris attended Drake University to complete his law degree. Following Norris’ graduation, they moved to Marathon, Iowa, where Norris was employed at the bank. Fran, too, worked at the bank for a brief period of time.

Fran was a loving and devoted mother and homemaker. She enjoyed making a home for her family while supporting and encouraging her children. She was very proud that she and Norris were able to host ten foreign exchange students from around the world in their home.

Fran was an active member of the Marathon United Methodist Church and coordinated the prayer chain notifications for church members. She also assisted with the collection of the Sunday offerings. Fran was a long time member of the Rebekah Lodge. Nonetheless, her grandchildren were the love of her life, and she cherished the times she could spend with them.

Fran’s life will always be loved and cherished by her family which includes her husband, Norris, Jr., of Marathon, Iowa; her children, Joan Olney, of Marathon, Iowa, Lesle Olney, of Marathon, Iowa, Bill Olney, of Marathon, Iowa, Richard (Angie) Olney, of Armstrong, Iowa, and Jayne Berends, of Spencer, Iowa; three grandchildren, Nathan Olney and Andrew and Dominic Berends; her brother, William J. Evans, of West Des Moines, Iowa; as well as other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Michael; and one brother, Orville D. Evans.
