Storm Lake, Iowa

Jane E. Larson, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on February 7, 2011, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Jane Larson was born on December 11, 1918, to Bert R. Hatch and Mabel (Wall) Hatch at their home in Marathon, Iowa. The family moved to Alta, Iowa, a few years later. Afterward, they moved from town to a farm south of Alta where Jane enjoyed helping care for the livestock and driving the team of horses. They later moved to a larger farm south and east of Alta. Jane started her education at the Alta Consolidated School and graduated in 1936. After graduation, she took a Correspondence Business course out of Omaha.

Jane began her career as the manager of the Mail Order Catalog Department at the Montgomery Ward store in Storm Lake. Later, she moved upstairs to work as the store's Cashier. There, she met her future husband, Lowell G. Larson.

They were married at her parents’ rural home on November 10, 1943. They made their home in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Lowell was stationed in the Army Air Force Finance Department. Jane found employment at the Montgomery Ward store in Lincoln, Nebraska.

After Jane had worked there for nearly a year, Lowell was transferred into the Army Infantry, sent to Texas for training and then went overseas to a replacement camp in Germany.

While Lowell was away, Jane returned home and worked at the Montgomery Ward Store in Storm Lake. After Lowell returned, she continued working there until their children arrived. She and Lowell were blessed with three: Gordon, who died at birth, Deanna and Gary.

Proud of her children’s achievements, Jane followed all of their progress throughout their education. She attended their extracurricular activities, belonged to the PTA, and supported the band boosters as well as their participation in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

During summer vacations, they took several family trips traveling anywhere from the West Coast to Washington, D.C. These were special experiences.

Later, Jane and Lowell were blessed with a precious grandson, Matt. His summer vacations with his grandparents in Storm Lake were a joyous time for all.

Jane enjoyed gardening, photography, sewing, traveling, camping, fairs, sports, and musical theater.

Throughout her adult life, Jane continued to volunteer, serving on the Buena Vista County Hospital Auxiliary Board for over 10 years and as President for two years. In addition, she was a District Representative of the Auxiliary for two years. Beside these activities, she was a 50 year member and Past Matron of the Alta Order of the Eastern Star #138, a member of P.E.O Chapter JD, and a member of the Cosmopolitan Club for over 25 years.

Beginning in childhood, she always made Sunday school and services at the Methodist Church a regular part of her life. A life member of the United Methodist Church, she belonged to the Storm Lake United Methodist Church for nearly 40 years. She taught Sunday school and Bible school. She participated in church activities including the WSCS, the Circle, and the church choir for over 25 years. She served as president of the UMW and as a church trustee. Until her health interfered, she was an active member of the Methodist Manor Guild.
