Gwendolyn Johnson, age 94, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City.

Velma Gwendolyn Victoria Skog, the youngest daughter of Amadus and Ida (Anderson) Skog, was born on the family farm on May 20, 1916. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Gwen grew up on the farm and attended school in Albert City, where she graduated as the class valedictorian.

On Saturday evening, December 20, 1940, Gwen was united in marriage to William G. Johnson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gunnard Johnson, at her parents' farm home. They were blessed with three sons: Craig William Harvey (March 7, 1942), Stuart Bruce (March 10, 1947), and Phillip Dexter (October 23, 1948). Gwen and Bill lived in her father's house and then moved to a farm north of Albert City called "The 90". A few years later, they moved back to Albert City into a home they purchased on Elm Street.

Gwen was a lifelong member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was a busy homemaker, baking, cleaning, quilting and making carpets. Gwen will be remembered by all who knew her as a hard worker and a devoted friend.

Gwen's life is lovingly remembered and cherished by her family, which includes her sons: Stuart (Kris) Johnson, of Albert City, Iowa, and Phillip (Mary) Johnson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Connie Johnson of Clinton, Iowa; her five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Doris Skog, of Albert City, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Lucille Skog of Albert City, Iowa; as well as many nieces; nephews; and other extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; her oldest son, Craig; and her siblings: Irene, Geneva, and Wendell.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
