March 12, 1924 - February 1, 2004Helen J. Woodford, age 79, of Marathon, passed away Sunday, February 1, 2004, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Helen Jean (Simeon) Woodford, the second of five children, was born to Henry and Jennie (Olsen) Simeon on March 12, 1924, at Paullina. She attended school at Laurens in her early years and graduated from Marathon High School in 1942.
In September of 1943, Helen was united in marriage to Elden Woodford at Lawton, Oklahoma, while Elden was in the Army at Fort Sill. They returned to Iowa and engaged in farming in 1946 until they retired in Marathon in 1982. Helen and Elden celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in September of 2003.
Helen was involved in many activities during her lifetime. She joined the Ladies Aid Society at the Methodist Church in 1946. A continuous member since that time, she held many positions in the organization. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and had several 600 series to her credit.
Always very interested in the Marathon Alumni Association, Helen served as the permanent secretary for the organization for many years. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to several card clubs in the area.
Helen was the "Voice of Albert City Threshermen," manning the microphone during the three days of activities at the threshing site. She had that duty for many years and enjoyed her part in announcing the events of the show.
A member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Helen served in various capacities for many years. Indeed, she maintained her memberhsip in the American Legion Auxiliary, Post No. 394, in Sioux Rapids, for fifty-five continuous years. From 1971 to 1972, she also was Vice President of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary. In addition, Helen was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Unit No. 3533, in Laurens.
Helen was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Marathon since 1942 and sang in the choir for many years. A very capable Christian lady, she believed in God and His Word.
Mourning her passing are her husband, Elden Woodford, of Marathon; her daughters: Deanna and Rex Ingalls, of Marathon, Linda and Howard Shelton, of Big Lake, Minnesota, and Julie and Tim Lullman, of Storm Lake; her seven grandchildren: Chris Jackson, of Marathon, Misty Shelton, and friend, Chris Asplund, of Fargo North Dakota, Lynn and Nicole Shelton, of Albertville, Minnesota, Tara and Jeannie Lullman, of Storm Lake, and Jessica and Faron Woodford, of Celina, Ohio; two great-grandchildren: McKenzie and Sydni Shelton, of Albertville, Minnesota; one brother, Jon and Patty Simeon, of California; one sister, Joann Fast, of Aurora, South Dakota; one sister-in-law, Susie Simeon Morgan, of California, and many other loving relatives and friends.
Preceding Helen in death were her parents: Henry and Jennie Simeon; two sons: Douglas Allen, in infancy, and Edwin Bruce Woodford; her sister, Ardean Martin, and her husband, Arlo; her brother, Harlan Simeon; her son-in-law, Robert L. Jackson; two grandchildren: Robert Lee Jackson, Jr., and Jon William Jackson; Elden's parents: John and Jessie Woodford; her sister-in-law, Mary Woodford, and her brother-in-law, Archie Woodford.
A funeral service was held Friday, February 6, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Marathon with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Burial was at the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Marathon was in charge of the arrangements.
