Judy R. Steffen, age 67, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of rural Albert City, Iowa, died December 14, 2010, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Judy (Erickson) Steffen was born October 6, 1943, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Ruth (Essick) and Carl Erickson. She attended grammar school in Peterson, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Albert City.
On September 28, 1963, Judy was united in marriage to Raymond Steffen at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa. Together they farmed and raised livestock 2 ½ miles north of Varina until April of 2003 when they moved to Storm Lake.
Judy attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and eventually graduated from Buena Vista University in 1993. Judy was very active in her community where she served on the Alter Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, W.D. Steiner Unit 588 in Varina for over 40 years and the Women of the Moose of Spencer, Iowa. She also served in both the Multi-county boards of Head Start, the Upper Des Moines Opportunity and the AEA. Judy enjoyed reading, cooking and making thousands of rosaries that she shared with the world.
Judy is survived by her husband of 47 years, Raymond; her daughters: Michele (Robbie) Abbenhaus, of Terrill, Iowa, Regene, of Storm Lake, Jana (Tracy) Lane, of Hospers, and Stephanie, of Storm Lake; her sons: Michael, of Lake View, and Jonathon (Jill), of Schaller; her grandchildren: Amber (Jeff) Cagle, Jarad Abbenhaus, and RyAnne and Izabelle Steffen and one great grandson, Justus Flannigan; her father and stepmother, Carl (Swede) and Ardie Erickson, of Peterson; her brothers, Carl (Edith), Peter (Nancy), Erik (Barb), and Alex (Linda); her stepsiblings: Jean (Tom) Steed, Christine (Bob) Johnson, Ray (Kathy) Essick, Russ (Cindy) Essick, and Sue (Terry) Parson; her sisters-in-law, Inez Berns and Marie Erickson; many nieces and nephews as well as other extended family and friends.
Judy was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Erickson, and her in-laws, Rose and Mike Steffen; her brother, David Erickson; and her brother-in-law, Jim Berns.
Visitation: 4-7:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 4:00 p.m., December 16, 2010, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., December 17, 2010, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m., December 16, 2010, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa
