Lyle M. Turnquist, age 82, of Sioux Rapids, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2003, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.

Lyle Merritt Turnquist, one of four children of Gust and Hattie (Lutter) Turnquist, was born on February 27, 1921, near Rembrandt. He graduated from Lincoln-Lee High School in the rural Albert City/Marathon area in 1938.

After graduation, he began farming before enlisting in the United States Army Air Force on August 21, 1942. Lyle completed aviation mechanic courses at the Army Air Forces Technical School in Amarillo, Texas, and was awarded his wings in February of 1944. While serving his country, Lyle successfully participated in 30 combat missions overseas and earned many distinctions as an engineer and top turret gunner on an Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress. On October 14, 1945, Lyle was honorably discharged.

Upon his discharge, Lyle returned home near Rembrandt to continue farming. On April 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Sheker in Jackson, Minnesota. Together they farmed both livestock, including hogs and cattle, and grain. During his last ten years of farming, however, he concentrated his efforts on grain. Lyle retired from farming in 1984. He enjoyed reading and took great pride in his work. His family will always remember his meticulous workshop.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Dorothy Turnquist, of Sioux Rapids; two sisters: Marjorie Madsen, of Rembrandt and Maxine Schomaker, of Cedar Falls, and many nieces and nephews and other loving relatives and friends.

Preceding Lyle in death were his parents, Gust and Hattie Turnquist, and his brother, Lawrence Turnquist.
