Melvin Grundmeier
April 10, 1931 - December 02, 2010

Storm Lake, Iowa

Melvin Fredrick Grundmeier, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died December 2, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake where he was recuperating from a fall on the ice.

Melvin was born April 10, 1931, in rural Sac County, a son of August Fredrick Grundmeier and Marie Amelia (Ploeger) Grundmeier. He was baptized and confirmed at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, rural Schaller.

Melvin attended the 1st through the 7th grade at several one room country schools and the 8th through the 11th grade at Hayes School, but he graduated from Alta High School in 1948. Interestingly, the house where his son, Gary, now lives was once a one room school house that Melvin attended.

Melvin played in the Topflight Hayes Band which placed in the first division in class “D” competition at the preliminary high school band contest in Storm Lake and competed in the state music contest in Sac City. Melvin, however, didn’t play in the high school band because he was a member of the musician’s union, playing the saxophone in a band that performed at several area towns. Then later in life, he was in church choirs and sang in quartets.

Melvin worked on the farm with his brother, Harold, from 1948-1950. He joined the United States Air Force on November 30, 1950, as an Airman First-Class, serving in Texas, California and England. He was discharged February 19, 1954. After the service, Mel returned home and farmed with his brother until he married.

On September 11, 1955, Melvin was united in marriage to Agnes Lund at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Together the couple farmed in Maple Valley & Hayes Townships until Mel retired and they moved to Storm Lake in 1987.

Melvin was an active church member, most recently at the Storm Lake United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Hayes Grange, the Barbershoppers, and he attended Via de Cristo. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, reading, fishing, helping out on the farm, working at the Buena Vista County Historical Society and spending time with his family and friends. Melvin also enjoyed the many summers he and Agnes stayed at their cabin in Minnesota.

His family includes three children: Gary Grundmeier, and his wife, Peg, of Storm Lake, Lynn Snyder, and her husband, Rolen, of Alta, and Dan Grundmeier, and his wife, Cyndi, of St. Paul, Minnesota; his eight grandchildren: Josh and Laura Grundmeier, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nick and Jessica Grundmeier, of Omaha, Nebraska, Eric Grundmeier, of Sioux City, Jamie Snyder, of Omaha, Nebraska, Brianna Snyder and Danny Imel, of Storm Lake and Ashly Schuette and Ryan Gilson, DJ Schuette, and David Grundmeier, all of St. Paul, Minnesota; his two great-grandchildren, Ethan Joel Grundmeier of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kealy Lynn Imel, of Storm Lake, Iowa.

Also surviving is his sister, Gladys (Don) Kestel, his sisters-in-law, Arlene Grundmeier, Ellen Rasmussen, and Ruby (Leon) Haahr and one brother-in-law, Norman (JoAn) Lund and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Clarence, and his wife Agnes; as well as by Harold Grundmeier, Art Grundmeier, Erv & Mildred Grundmeier, Viola & Curtis Dills, Elwood & Goldie Lund; Arnold Rasmussen; Theresa (Rasmussen) Haburn, Ronald Haahr.
