Barbara E. Sassman
August 16, 1938 - August 29, 2003

Barbara E. Sassman, age 65, of Rembrandt, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2003, at her home.

Barbara Ellen Mitchell Sassman, one of five children of Aubrey Clarence and Edith Grace (Parsons) Mitchell, was born on August 16, 1938, in Clay County. She attended school in Greenville-Rossie and graduated from Greenville-Rossie High School in 1956. After graduation, Barbara moved to Sioux Rapids.

On November 13, 1960, she was united in marriage to Norman Gene Sassman at the First Congregational Church in Sioux Rapids. They moved to a farm near Rembrandt where they raised their three sons, Jeff, Jay and Cory.

Barbara helped Norman on the farm and began selling Avon products in 1983. She also worked as a waitress at various places. Of all her jobs, Barbara most enjoyed her role as wife and mother. Norman passed away on June 27, 1995, and Barbara moved off the farm and into Rembrandt in 1998.

Barbara enjoyed many activities including tending her flowers and canning. She was an avid Wednesday night Bingo player in Sioux Rapids. Most of all, however, she cherished spending time with her family and her friends, who loved her very much. She was especially fond of her grandson, Matthew.

Preceding Barbara in death were her parents, Aubrey and Edith; her husband, Norman; and her sister, Marilyn.

Survivors include her three sons: Jeff Sassman, and his wife, Jean, of Storm Lake, Jay Sassman, and his wife, Tammy, of Rembrandt, and Cory Sassman, and his friend, Angie, of Sioux Rapids; one grandson, Matthew Sassman, of Rembrandt; a brother, Rolland Mitchell, and his wife, Catherine, of Rembrandt; her sisters: Lola Luinstra, and her husband, Wilbert, of May City, and Sherry Peterson, and her husband, Dean, of Spencer; a brother-in-law, Don Nielsen, of Webb and many other loving relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rembrandt with Reverend Emily Allen officiating. Burial was in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake was in charge of the arrangements.
