Charles Alfred Miles
July 20, 1910 - June 26, 2003

Charles Alfred Miles, age 92, of Storm Lake, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2003, at the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.

Charles Alfred Miles was born on July 20, 1910, the son of Charles and Helena (Manthe) Miles in Huron, Kansas. He attended school in Atchison County, Kansas, and after his schooling, he began farming.

On January 31, 1934, Alfred was united in marriage to Carrie Ellen Robinson in Willis, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children: Dean, Larry and Wanda. In 1946, the family moved to Carnavon, Iowa, and farmed there until 1950 when they moved to Ida Grove. Alfred continued farming in Ida Grove until he and Carrie moved to Schaller in 1960 where he operated a hog buying station. They remained there through Alfred's retirement in 1975. On October 9, 1979, Carrie passed away, and Alfred moved to Storm Lake in 1982.

On December 27, 1982, Alfred was united in marriage to Alice (Herzberg) Gerke. He continued to live in Storm Lake even after Alice passed away on July 10, 1994. A year and a half ago, Alfred moved to the Morningside Care Center in Ida Grove.

Alfred lived an active life, and he enjoyed dancing, participating in the seniors' group and spending time with family and friends. A lifelong enthusiast of his draft horses, he raised, trained and traded them. They brought him great pride and joy throughout his life.

Survivors include two sons: Dean Miles, and his wife, Janet, of Ida Grove and Larry Miles, and his wife, Wilma, of Arthur; one daughter: Wanda Marian, and her husband, Owen, of Escondido, California; 10 grandchildren: Rick (Sharon) Miles, of Spirit Lake, Kay (Jack) Walker, of Rembrandt, Randy (Susan) Miles, of Galina, Illinois, Karen (David) Petersen, of Ida Grove, Mike (Julie) Miles, of Cheotah, Oklahoma, Tracy (Jason) Connor, of DeSota, Missouri, Tanya (Chris) Bell, of Levittown, Pennsylvania, Becky (Brian) Hutchinson, of Warren, Ohio, Marie (Rick) Hopper, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Barb (Ed) Newberry, of Elkhorn, Nebraska; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Haupt, of Scott City, Kansas; two sisters-in-law: Rosemarie Miles, of Atchison, Kansas, and Marie Robinson, of Federal Way, Washington; several nieces and nephews and other loving relatives and friends.

Preceding Alfred in death were his parents; both wives, Carrie, on October 9, 1979, and Alice, on July 10, 1994; two brothers and three sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Interment will be in the Schaller Cemetery. The Sliefert ~ Asmus Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
