October 29, 1907 - November 10, 2010Agnes (Hawkins) Beckfield, age 103, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Viola Agnes Carnine, the daughter of Thomas and Maude (Richeson) Carnine, was born in Pocahontas County, Iowa, on October 29, 1907. There were four brothers and three sisters in Agnes’ family. Her life progressed as any other child's of that era, beginning in a one room schoolhouse, switching to a horse drawn school bus to Nemaha, and eventually attending public school in Sac City. During her sophomore year, Agnes was no longer able to go to high school because she was needed at home to care for her two younger siblings because of her mother's health.
In 1922, a young man (Cloyd Hawkins) from Pana, Illinois, entered her life after they met at a dance. A budding romance began and Cloyd and Agnes were united in marriage on December 25, 1924, at Newell, Iowa.
In the fall of 1925 with the promise of a job in Illinois, Cloyd and Agnes moved to Illinois. On November 28, 1925, the first of their two sons, Eugene, was born. They returned to the Sac City area in the fall of 1926. On November 18, 1929, their second son, Kermit, was born.
Cloyd passed away on November 4, 1951, on a farm two miles south of Newell. Agnes had a farm sale in the spring of 1952 and moved into Storm Lake. She was first employed in the sheriff’s office and then worked in the Buena Vista County Clerk of Court’s office for Gene Lucia. She worked in that office for over 30 years. In 1961, Agnes married Leo Beckfield and joined the family in their home at 407 Barton Street, across the street from the present day Methodist Manor Retirement Community.
Agnes planned a temporary move to the Methodist Manor on January 1, 2008, to recover from surgery, but the Methodist Manor became her permanent residence following a head injury. Agnes lived the remainder of her life at Methodist Manor.
Agnes and Leo were members of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Storm Lake, and she belonged to the St. John’s Ladies Aid. Agnes also was a member of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.
Agnes’ life will always be cherished and celebrated by her family which includes her son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Zeta Hawkins, of Kasson, Minnesota; five grandchildren; one step grandson; four step granddaughters; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; one brother, Lester Carnine, of Alta, Iowa; and her sister, Bertha Dees, of San Diego, California; nieces, nephews, other extended family, and six very close friends: Donna J. Truelson, Orlean Skibstead, Pauline Sorenson, Fern Crowley, and Maxine Zubradt, all of Storm Lake, and Luke and Ina Rae Shannon of Alta, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother, Reba Carnine; her two husbands, Cloyd Hawkins and Leo Beckfield; her son, Kermit; three brothers; and two sisters along with several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
What a wonderful life this 103 year old lady has had!
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in Agnes’ memory to St. John’s Lutheran Church or the Methodist Manor Retirement Community.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place on Friday, November 19, 2010, from 5-8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Nemaha Cemetery in Nemaha, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
