Velma Banta, age 91, of Commerce City, Colorado, formally of Alta, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at the North Suburban Hospital of Thornton, Colorado.

Velma Anna Kate (Lafrentz) Banta was born June 14, 1919, on a farm northwest of Holstein to Hugo and Linda (Kuhlmann) Lafrentz. She attended grade school in Ida Grove and graduated from Correctionville High School in May, 1937.

On March 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to Sylvester Banta at the St. Joseph Rectory in Anthon after which they enjoyed a wedding dance in the I.O.O.F. Hall in Anthon. They enjoyed dancing throughout their married life. To this union, three children were born: Darrell Dean, Karen Ann and Sandra Kay.

Velma and Sylvester worked on numerous farms throughout northwest Iowa before moving to Alta in 1948 where Sylvester was employed at the Farmers Elevator.

In Storm Lake, Velma worked for several years at the Methodist Manor and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She moved to Commerce City, Colorado, in 2004 to be near her daughters. She was called to rest while recovering from a heart attack which she suffered on July 18, 2010.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, one son-in-law, Donald DeVall, and one sister, Vernita Hetrick. She is survived by her two daughters, Karen DeVall and Sandra Schutt and her husband, William, all of Commerce City, Colorado; one daughter-in-law, Kim (Banta) Kantor, of Naples, Florida; and one sister, Ione Munz, and her husband, Carroll, of Paradise Valley, Arizona; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; fifteen great- great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service was held Friday, November 12, 2010, with Rev. Bruce Lawler officiating at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. Burial was at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery of Storm Lake. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta was in charge of arrangements.
