October 6, 1915 - May 16, 2003

Marvin Sassman, age 87, of Marathon, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2003, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

The son of John and Kate (Partridge) Sassman, Marvin W. Sassman was born on October 6, 1915, near Marathon. He lived his entire life in the Marathon community. Marvin was united in marriage to Lorrene Gross on July 6, 1937, in Jackson, Minnesota. This union was blessed with four children.

As a young man, he worked for the CCC. Later, in his adult years, Marvin was a farm-to-market truck driver until he retired in 1977. In addition to trucking, Marvin delivered the Des Moines Sunday Register for 37 years, and he also drove a school bus for the Marathon school district for 18 years.

Marvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lorrene, of Marathon; two sons: Larry Sassman and his wife, Mary, of Des Moines and Ron Sassman, and his wife, Marilyn, of Branson, Missouri; six grandchildren, Sherry Mills and her husband Tim, of Polk City, Doug Sassman and his wife Missy, of Des Moines, Mark Sassman of Chicago, Stacy Sassman and his wife Jen, of Waterloo, Michele Stacey and her husband Mike, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Gerry Gene Sassman of Minneapolis; nine great-grandchildren, Adam and Kelley Mills, Jerad, Molle and Grant Sassman, Emily and Abby Sassman, and Sarah and Ashley Stacey; one brother, Al Sassman and his wife, Ruth of Hastings, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, John and Kate Sassman; two sons: Jerry Gene and Steven Jon; and five brothers and sisters: Lloyd, John, Ora Titus, Clarence, Ina Grow and Harold.

A funeral service was held on Monday, May 19, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Marathon with Reverend David Schumann officiating. Interment will be in Poland Township Cemetery. A visitation was held on Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Sliefert - Asmus Funeral Home in Marathon. The Sliefert - Asmus Funeral Home in Marathon was in charge of the arrangements.
