Louis Theodore Hankel

Louis Theodore Hankel was born on January 30, 1916, to Herman and Minnie (Otto) Hankel in Hampton, Nebraska. He was baptized on February 20, 1926, by Pastor Brommer at Zion Lutheran in Hampton and confirmed on May 12, 1929, by Rev. O. Gaebner. He attended country school in Nebraska through the eighth grade. Louie then started working on the family farm.

Louis entered the CCC Camps in South Dakota in the 1930s. He moved to Iowa and began working for Dick Hinkeldey. On August 10, 1941, he married Mary Hartman at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Louis served in the U.S. Navy from June of 1942 through October of 1945 as a Gunner's Mate, 2nd class. He was awarded a Bronze Star.

Louie farmed in the Hanover and Schaller areas. He also was a long distance truck driver. He delivered ground feed for the Alta Elevator; he worked at Hy-Grade in Storm Lake; and he was a grounds keeper at the Alta Country Club.

Louie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alta, a charter member of the V.F.W. Post #6172 in Alta, and a former member of the Kiwanis. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, gardening, and spending time with family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and three sisters, Cora, Gertrude, and Clara.

Louie is survived by one son, Ronald Hankel and his wife Linda, of Yakima, Washington; one daughter, Debra Ramquist and her husband Daryl, of Bellevue, Nebraska; two brothers and their wives, LeRoy and Blondina Hankel, of Utica, Nebraska, and Harry and Phyllis Hankel, of York, Nebraska; two sisters, Lily Bjorkman, of Gretna, Nebraska, and Victoria Coleman, of Richardson, Texas; five grandchildren, Christopher and Stacey Hankel, Shannon Hankel, Carrie and Justin Fox, Allison Mason, and Joshua Ramquist; and three great granddaughters, Madison Hankel, Olivia Hankel, and Hailey Fox.
