June 15, 1910 - April 10, 2003Orville William Harms, 92, of Storm Lake, formerly of Alta, died at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake on Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the age of 92 years, nine months, and 26 days.
The son of Henry and Clara (Herzberg) Harms, he was born on June 15, 1910, in Yorktown, Iowa. He attended parochial school in Yorktown. He began farming with his parents and later moved to the Alta area in the 1930s. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on July 3, 1910, and was confirmed on April 13, 1924, at St. Paul's in Yorktown. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alta.
He married Irene (Beckfield) Harms on June 11, 1939, in Albert City. The couple settled in the Alta area and farmed until retiring in 1973 and then moved into Alta. In 1999, they moved to Methodist Manor in Storm Lake. Orville loved to fish, garden, read, work on jigsaw puzzles and listen to music.
Survivors include his wife, Irene, Alta; sons, Lowell Harms, Omaha, Nebraska, and Alan and his wife, Jan Harms, of Lake Charles, Louisiana; daughters, Colene and her husband, Raymond Staples, of Kerrville, Texas, and Jeanine and her husband, Ken Von Bon, of Granger; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three infant children; one brother, Reinold Harms; and one sister, Alice Hart.
Funeral Services for Orville Harms will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2002, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alta with Pastor Kevin Huss officiating. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 15, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. with family present at the Barker Funeral Home in Alta.
